After scrambling to put together a quick Cali-Creek weekend trip, Cody and I got back in at 4:
30am Monday morning. First day out we headed on over to NF Willow creek where we
expected a good warm up run before we went out to the EF Kaweah. To our surprise Willow
was more full-on than we could have ever imagined! We decided to run the lower section
after hearing stories of massive marginally runnable slides, which were considered portages.

After paddling through ½ mile of class III knuckle scraping we arrived at the first mini gorge.
The first drop was considered the first portage: a 15 foot total drop with a small line to avoid
the bowled out cave in the landing. We both hit the line without issues. With a little more
paddling we came to the “gorge” section of the run. The awesome Cali-granite gave up some
super fun 5 to 10 foot boofs and slides.
Cody, lost in Granite WonderLand
At the end of this gorge we came up to another massive horizon line which turned out to be
a big slide with a 25 footer in the middle. I probed it and with a 360 and a piton, and
sprained my ankle. Deciding to stick with only one injury Cody portaged. After this we were
at Devil’s slide. We decided to seal launch in above a 40-45 foot slide and run the final two
drops, all in all it was AMAZING! We realized we were about ¾ of a mile away from the take
out as we paddled up to another mini gorge. We scouted a cool 8 footer at the top followed
by a small hole and what appeared to be a fun looking pillow side boof. Cody pulled out the
camera and I got in my boat.

First drop, fun, stroke through the hole, and a right stroke with left knee up for the last
move. As soon as I hit the pillow I knew this was not what it looked like and I was expecting to
get pinned sideways upside down! To my surprise my bow got sucked down and spun
forward into a vertical pin facing downstream. The force of the water imploded my skirt and I
threw my hands to the top of the river right boulder and was able to pull myself out of the
boat as it was bending and being sucked deeper into the sieve. We set up a pin kit with four
people pulling and still couldn’t get the boat to budge!

We finally had to cut away the rope and the boat disappeared completely into the sieve.
Happy to be alive I hiked alongside Cody until we reached Angel falls, a massive 3 part slide
with a 50-60 foot slide in the middle and a sieved out double drop at the bottom. Cody ran
the slide into the pool and let me hike up and do it in his boat as well. It was AWESOME!
Portaging the rest of the 99% unrunnable slides we got to the take out stoked with the day’s
run.
Below a real nasty drop.  Fun one though
Hungry and baffled we got some Carl’s Jr and contemplated park and hucks since I no
longer had a boat. We finally decided that I would hike and film Cody on the NFMF Tule. So
we woke up late and put on for the short huck Sunday to finish off the trip. Cody started out
with a sweet 30 foot slide followed by a teacup style 10 footer and 20 footer. After a couple
more fun little drops we came to the crux of the run, the dam. The line was left to middle with
a hard turn to avoid a piton above the final slide. Amazingly Cody pulled the move perfectly
and had an awesome line. All in all a super cool little run.

So, here’s the grand total:

Gas: $500

Food: $150

Lost Gear: $1500

Portages: 4

Injuries: 1

Fun: 100%

Luck: 100%

On-Line: 80%

Phrase of the trip: “Oh my God this is freeking
massive!”
